When scientists saw (Clusters, Galaxies, and Stars) were expanding they realize that from one point the universe has started. 

They take time back through a certain equation.

Scientists believed that a point named (POINT OF SINGULARITY) had indefinite density, after a blast(Big Bang).

 The waste of it was spread, that waste is our Galaxies, Planets, Stars, etc. further, the theory says that there was no universe before the blast. 

Through this equation, we come to know that there might be several big bangs(when the universe blast) and big crunches(when the universe contract into a point with indefinite density).
